Hush Loft of the Circle of Mute Radiance

The chalk is renewed; the omissions survive

The Hush Loft houses Mute Radiance in the bell-dead attic of Dome-Split Tenement 4B. Chalk drills are renewed, the shrine candle kept low, and every clean floor makes an admirable return.

#On the Attic and the Dead Air

The Hush Loft is the attic of Dome-Split Tenement 4B. It is the home base of the Circle of Mute Radiance. The tenement stands inside a bell-dead zone, and those who climb to the Loft report that sound there feels swallowed before it has earned the dignity of an echo. I report the same. I have stood under its beam and cleared my throat, a sound that has quieted three Bureaus in session, and the attic took it from me like a sacristan confiscating a choirboy's whistle.

The swallowing is a report. No surveyor has measured where the deadness begins, how far up the stair it climbs or whether it thickens under the eaves, and the ground below belongs to the general survey of Hush-Zones. The name settles nothing either. "Dome-Split" is a designation in a register. It certifies no Dome, no fracture made by one, and no year in which anything split.

Two silences share the attic. The masonry's silence is a failure. The Circle's is an order laid over that failure and stretched well past it: no screams, no gatherings, no audible truth. A Brother could whisper to the man beside him under that beam and be heard perfectly well. He keeps quiet because the Loft is where he was taught to.

#On the Marked Floor

The floor is the Loft's breviary. Hand-code diagrams and mirror-flash drills are chalked on the boards and renewed as they wear, so the floor a Brother crosses at dusk is younger than the one he scuffed at dawn. Nobody has drawn a measured plan of it. The record gives no complete key to the diagrams, no spacing between stations and no standard angle for the wrist. A visitor who leaves with a chart drew it himself, and I have confiscated two.

Cloth hangs along the walls, padding them from boards to rafters, or as near the rafters as a Brother on a stool can reach. No clerk has calculated what the cloth adds to the quiet. Nobody credits it with the deadness of the zone, which the zone had already. It is linen, nailed up by men who wanted the room to agree with them.

Beneath a beam stands a small shrine. Its candle is kept barely lit, because too much flame makes noise in the glass. I was not told to whom the shrine is dedicated and did not ask. In that room a question is answered with a finger, and I had no wish to learn which one.

LOCATION NOTE — THE HUSH LOFT Situation: attic, Dome-Split Tenement 4B; bell-dead zone Reported condition: sound feels swallowed; unmeasured Floor: hand-code diagrams and mirror-flash drills, chalked and renewed Walls: padded with hanging cloth Shrine: small, beneath a beam; candle kept barely lit Measured plan, diagram key, dedication: not entered

The equipment of the Circle is known: mirror shards, cloth gags, chalk, hood clamps and soft cuffs. Where each lies overnight is not. I have seen chalk in the Loft, which proves that chalk was in the Loft. The record makes no inventory of the room. I decline to furnish one from my own imagination, which is an excellent instrument and has already been requisitioned for other purposes.

#On Drill Before Curfew

The Circle's daily order begins at dusk with breath discipline, the shard check and the hood clamp test. The marked floor exists for that hour.

The hand comes first. A bent finger means halt, and two fingers drawn across the throat mean seal the mouth. A palm turned down and tapped three times at sternum height means crowd pressure at the left flank. When I watched, nobody explained whose left. The four recorded signs and their limits are set out in Hand-Code. I will not chalk a fifth onto these boards so that Signal Law's arithmetic comes out even.

The glass comes second. A Brother half-hoods his lantern, sets a shard in the slit of flame and tilts it 1–2–1, which means Circle converge. The drill demands what the street will demand of it: clean glass, a steady wrist and a clear line of sight. Smoke ruins it. A corner ruins it entirely. The single recorded pattern, and everything the record omits about its timing, range and answer, belongs to Mirror-Flash. The chalk on the floor supplies none of the missing parts.

The grammar is borrowed. The Line drilled its trench signals under the Domes, and the Lantern Brotherhood carried the hands and the shards home for its night work in the city. The attic is where Mute Radiance keeps that borrowing in practice.

The hood clamp is tested last. It fits behind the jaw. A Brother who has felt one fitted learns, through the bone, what the street will feel, and he learns to fit it gently enough that the report contains no bruise.

Under all of it lies the Breath Oath. The initiate carries a lit lantern along a corridor for a count of one hundred without audible breath. He may breathe, but he must not be heard doing it, and failure means repetition. The record does not name the corridor. I will not move it into the attic because it would read well there.

Spark Jani Kest, attached to the Circle, reportedly sees patterns in the flashes that the manual does not contain. The Bureau of Shadows has taken an interest. No chalk on the Loft floor records those patterns. I have recommended in writing that it stay that way, and Shadows has acknowledged my recommendation with a silence of its own.

#On Departure and Renewal

At Curfew Silence the patrol pairs go down the stair and into the streets without a spoken word, by hand-code only. The Ordinance of Quiet Hours quiets the city by bell. In a bell-dead zone the bell arrives flat, and a Warden shouts into swallowed air. The Circle's pairs have no voice to lose.

From there the order belongs to the street. Early night brings hush enforcement and the dispersal of gatherings before they become sound. Midnight brings quiet removals and sealed-mouth detentions. Late night brings corridor marking and leak hunts for whoever is spreading stories. The record places none of this in the attic. A reader who pictures detainees carried up the tenement stair has added a staircase scene that nobody filed.

The residents learn the Circle's chalk on their own walls: three parallel lines, speak softly or not at all. That mark faces the street. The floor of the Loft speaks only to Brothers, and the two vocabularies do not mix.

Before dawn, the order prescribes that field notes be burned, training marks reset and shards cleansed in ash water. The record does not say in which room the notes burn. The marks, at least, are reset where they are kept. A Brother kneels with a rag, wipes away the night's scuffing and chalks the diagrams fresh, and the floor is ready to be wrong in new places by dusk.

#On the Cloth and the Cabinet File

Padded cloth carries a second reputation. The Hush Beating, methodical and non-lethal, is done behind closed doors, and the parent folio speaks of rooms with padded cloth on the walls. The record puts padded cloth in this attic. It does not say this attic is one of those rooms. It establishes no cell in the Loft and no chamber under it, no passage through the party wall and no Circle mastery of the tenement below. I enter what is known and nothing that merely suits the cloth.

Whatever happens in the Circle's rooms happens without a commission. Auxiliaries hold no Bureau commission, no officer's rank and no power of arrest, whatever titles the Brotherhood gives itself. The street says arrest. The Ledger says silent detention, and real arrest stays with the Bureau of Purity and its proper paper.

The Tongue Cabinet is the Circle's toleration-killer: a rumour of trophies taken from removals, with teeth, tongues and wax-sealed mouth relics catalogued in a careful hand. Shadows has investigated it three times. Its Review File 18-H names Dome-Split Tenement 4B. It reports an item that an informant called a "cabinet," recovered from a wall cavity behind padded cloth. The visible inventory lists six wax pellets bearing lip impressions, three teeth threaded on black cord and one mirror shard reported to reflect a mouth that was not present. One line of the contents is barred out.

The file does not name the attic. It does not say which wall. It confirms no tongue, no victim and no behaviour in the shard beyond the report, and it puts no cabinet in the Loft today.

Item described by informant as "cabinet" recovered from wall cavity behind padded cloth.

Finding revised to "training equipment, irregular storage." Informant unavailable for confirmation.

#On Continued Occupation

As of A.S. 201, the Hush Loft remains the Circle's home base. Its marks are renewed and its candle is kept low. Its patrol pairs still go down the stair at curfew. Nobody has recorded when the attic was built, converted or first occupied, and nobody has recorded when the shrine was set under its beam. The present survey dates none of these.

The Circle's licence rests on the auxiliary clause of the A.S. 94 Ordinance, which grants local toleration revocable without notice or appeal. The Bureau of Records keeps it within Category C/44 limits under quarterly review. Standing Order 14-V, revised in A.S. 199, caps a Circle at thirty licensed operatives. That figure is a ceiling. It tells no one how many Brothers sleep under this roof or kneel on this floor. The Bureau of Bells has measured the dead air around the tenement and signed nothing about it.

The floor has one blind spot. It drills Brothers to read silence as compliance. A Lantern Mercy Preacher who speaks softly in a bell-dead alley draws a congregation that is perfectly silent. The Loft has no diagram for that congregation, and nobody has proposed chalking one.
