A Historical Narrative

Hymns for the Hollow

The hollow come to walk. What was loved is consumed.

Marten Voss sings demon-oil out of the ground for a living. Fifteen years he's crouched at the lip of corrupted craters in the marshes beyond Bastion-Rhineland, coaxing the wound to stay quiet while the pumps drink. A good hymn keeps the seam sleeping. A bad one wakes it — and Marten has never sung a bad one.

Then the wound sings back. In his own voice. With a harmony it shouldn't know.

His crewmate walks into the fog and the thing that returns wears her face wrong. The market fills with doubles who smell of rot and diesel. In the Confession Lanes, a scribe has been hired to rewrite every document that proves Marten Voss ever existed — and the man commissioning the edits has Marten's own hands. Somewhere past the eastern approaches lies the Quiet Basin, the crater that swallowed his lover Kael six years ago and sent something else back in her place. The source is there. So, perhaps, is she.

To cross the marsh is to learn which version of himself walks out.
