Fog-Reader
Every household owes a voice; the sea promises nothing
Calais's Fog-Readers speak the Script Wall's names under Protocol 9-C. The Church owns their night voices; the sea decides what the reading buys.
Codex Ref. XII.13.02-201
Mara White
An erased page against a compulsory voice
Mara White, lieutenant to Brother Vell of the Unread, raises erased pages against Calais's mandatory Script Wall readings. The Bureau has a name, a habit, and no personal charge.
Codex Ref. III.2.01-368

Fog is only weather until it spells your mother's name
At the Chalk Redoubt of Calais, fog writes names on seventy feet of exposed chalk; readers speak them before the sea decides who was meant.
